Emerald Isle's modern history began in the early 1950s. At that time, the 12-mile stretch of pristine coastline was privately owned and considered a hidden treasure. Seven investors, led by Henry K. Fort, purchased the land for $350,000 from the Red Springs area of North Carolina. Fort and the investors saw the area's potential as a vacation destination, and it wasn’t long before the landscape began to transform into what we know today.
The name "Emerald Isle" was chosen to reflect the island’s lush maritime forests and the area’s green, jewel-like beauty as seen from the air.
